From the opening pages
I turned thirty-three with two promises to myself.
The first was deeply personal: I would finally read the book my father had written nearly ten years before he died.
The second was an adventure I had postponed for years. I would travel alone to the Peruvian Amazon, disappear into the jungle for two weeks, and, if courage did not fail me, drink ayahuasca under the guidance of a shaman.
Medical school had become residency. Residency had become fellowship. Every milestone seemed to create another excuse to postpone living. There was always another patient to see, another paper to write, another exam to pass.
Now there were no more excuses.
Looking back, I realize I thought I was planning a vacation.
I was actually walking toward the event that would divide my life into two parts: everything before the Amazon, and everything after.
